Dr. Skott Jones, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, recently authored a guidebook while on sabbatical for an upcoming nature trail designed specifically for children on the autism spectrum.
The Autism Nature Trail, scheduled to be built at Letchworth State Park, provides a safe and inclusive setting for visitors with autism spectrum disorders to experience nature in a way uniquely suited to them. The mile-long, self-paced trail loop is comprised of eight stations that address various sensory needs, three captivating features, and several specialized elements like cuddle swings, gliders, and “alone zones.” In the guidebook, Dr. Jones presents five principles of facilitating language in children with autism spectrum disorders based on 30 years of research. The principles are followed by a step-by-step guide on how to facilitate language at each station on the trail.
