“A Senseless Tragedy” by former Ithacan editor-in-chief Kayla Dwyer ’17 has been awarded Second Place for News Writing nationally in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Circle Award competition for 2017.

The story, which appeared in the Sept. 1, 2016, issue of The Ithacan, reported on the murder of, and remembrance ceremony for, Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire, who was killed during a fight on the Cornell University campus Aug. 28, 2016.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association is an international student press association, founded in 1925, whose goal is to unite student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges, textbooks, critiques and award programs.

The Gold Circle Awards, the CSPA’s top honors for individual work, are offered to recognize superior work by student journalists working either in print or online media.
