"DREAM ACTS" A Play About Dreamers and DACA!

02/08/18

Saturday February 10 at 6:30 pm we invite you to “DREAM ACTS,” a timely and necessary play and conversation about DREAMERS and DACA.

An international cohort of writers, including Ithaca College Department of Theatre Arts, Assistant Professor of Playwriting Saviana Stanescu, wrote “DREAM ACTS.” Directed by Cynthia Henderson, Associate Professor of Acting, the play will be performed this Saturday, February 10 at 6:30 pm in the Clark Lounge of the Campus Center. This one time performance is FREE and open to the entire Ithaca College community!

Following the performance there will be a conversation with Saviana Stanescu; Patricia Rodriguez, Associate Professor of Politics; and the CAST of DREAM ACTS.

In DREAM ACTS, five undocumented teens from Nigeria, Mexico, Ukraine, Korea, and Jordan face the extraordinary challenge of living ordinary lives under the radar. Each story is moving and urgent; some are funny, others are tragic, and through their experiences, we learn about the DREAM Act and the secret lives led by undocumented youth.

The writers are members of the DREAM Act Union (www.dreamactunion.org), a group of women theatre artists from diverse backgrounds. Mia Chung is a Korean-American playwright obsessed with migration in all its forms, ranging from geographic to economic. Jessica Litwak is a theatre activist, teacher, playwright, drama therapist and actor. Chiori Miyagawa is a Japan-born U.S. playwright whose work often revolves around themes of memory and identity. Andrea Thome is a Chilean-Costa Rican, Wisconsin-born playwright who grew up navigating multiple landscapes and languages. Saviana Stanescu is a NY-based Romanian award-winning playwright and the founder of Immigrant Artists and Scholars in New York.

As the issues around DACA and the Dream Act are becoming painfully relevant again - many DREAMERS and other undocumented immigrants are getting deported right NOW – we are continuing this conversation at Ithaca College.

This event is sponsored by Performing Arts for Social Change and supported by the Ithaca College Department of Theatre Arts.

Performing Arts for Social Change (pa4sc.com) is a program whose mission is to raise awareness and educate by giving a voice to important societal issues that are often overlooked. We do this through the creation and development of performance pieces that serve as teaching moments for the people involved in the creative process as well as for the audiences who view it.

Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Cynthia Henderson at chenderson@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-1243. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
