A student researcher from the Department of Psychology at Ithaca College is recruiting musicians to be part of a study involving musical memory of a melody.
Participating in this study enters you into a lottery for a $25 Visa gift card. The researchers are looking for people 18 or older who have passed an Aural Skills 2 course and who are capable of memorizing a phrase of tonal music. The study will involve two sessions. In the first session, you will receive a 13-note melody to memorize and will be provided detailed instructions of how and when to practice the melody for a week outside of the lab, after which you will come in for the second session. The first session is estimated to take less than 10 minutes. During the week between the sessions you will be asked to practice the melody for 10 minutes a day, totaling 70 minutes of practice, and you will asked to record your sleep and practice for each day in a provided log. During the second session, you will be tested on your memory of your assigned melody and will be asked to sight sing; this will take less than 20 minutes. We ask that you do not share or discuss your melodies with other people, including other participants. We estimate that the total time of participation (across the two sessions, and including the at-home practice sessions) will require 1 hour and 40 minutes.
