It’s now easier than ever to report fraudulent (or suspected) “phishing” email messages to Information Technology. You may have noticed the new “Report as Phishing” button in Outlook for Windows/macOS, or Outlook on the web. It appears at the top left of the email message window.
To use the button, click on "Report as Phishing,” which will expand to show the subject and sender of the email, allowing you to confirm that you want to report the message. If you are certain, clicking "Report Message" will forward the email as an attachment to spam@ithaca.edu and move the message to your Junk E-mail folder. You do not have to report the message to the IT Service Desk if you use the Report as Phishing button. Note that this button will not appear in non-Microsoft email programs or on mobile devices.
If you've clicked the button but decide you don't want to report the message, click the blue "Report as Phishing" button again (above the confirmation window) to collapse it. No information will be sent to IT.
This button is part of a security awareness suite of tools by KnowBe4, which will help Ithaca College combat the growing problem of fraudulent email messages and the damage they can cause if the user responds to the message or clicks links in it. Promptly reporting phishing messages will help IT more quickly identify phishing attacks that made it through our automated filters and take steps to mitigate their impact.
