Assistant Provost Tanya Saunders is pleased to announce the names of the faculty members selected for the 2018-19 London Faculty Sabbatical Program.
Dr. Luke Keller, Charles A. Dana Professor in the Natural Sciences, will spend the Fall 2018 semester in London. He plans to teach a new ICC-designated course, ‘Newton to Darwin, Halley to Higgs: a Tour of British Natural Science.’ Dr. Keller will offer students an understanding of “related scientific concepts and how the scientific process developed and has become the method by which we learn about nature.” In addition to teaching, Dr. Keller is working with research colleagues to prepare for the launch of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope for “new astrophysical studies of solar system formation.” Dr. Keller is a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
The Spring 2019 London Sabbatical recipient is Dr. James Mick, Associate Professor of Music Education in the School of Music. He will continue the legacy of previous London Sabbatical Music faculty by teaching the ICC-designated course, ’Exploring Cultural Diversity in the London Music Scene.’ He plans to have students “attend performances in a wide variety of venues and visit areas of London ranging from the West End to Brixton. Students will interview musicians and expand their views of music and culture while creating self-reflection on their own musical and cultural experiences.” Professionally, Dr. Mick plans to explore “the string music education field to establish a new scholarly agenda … and will visit school orchestra programs, interact with young musicians, and develop scholarly ideas that will result in a research agenda” going forward.
The Office of International Programs and Extended Studies (OIPES) launched the London Sabbatical Program in 1997 to strengthen the connections between the London Center and home campus faculty. Faculty who participate in the sabbatical program serve as resources for course instructors in London and for the OIPES as it considers new courses and new initiatives to enhance the London experience for Ithaca College students.
