Entre Los Hielos De Las Islas Orcadas will be screened as part of the 2018 Fingerlakes Film Festival (FLEFF). This screening is a collaborative partnership between the Museo del Cine Archive in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and FLEFF.
The film will be screened with a live improvisational score performed by Cloud Chamber Orchestra. It will also feature a theatrical prologue about meteorologist Moneta, the histories of Antarctica, and the discovery of this rare film, performed by Cynthia Henderson, Theater Arts, Ithaca College.
This rare documentary has only been screened once in the US, but not in the fully restored version with recently recovered footage that will be screening in FLEFF this year.
Entre Los Hielos De Las Islas Orcadas is an Argentinian documentary tracking an Antarctic expedition which features some of the earliest film footage shot on the continent of Antarctica. It shows an Antarctic landscape before the onslaught of global climate change.
Inspired by Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North (US, 1922), Argentine meteorologist José Manuel Moneta recorded in the base "Orcadas" (Islas Orcadas del Sur) in 1927. It is the first film recorded by a Latin American in Antarctica and the first full-length feature film to be shot in Antarctica. Moneta was considered one of Argentina’s Antarctic stars, and wrote an influential book on his four scientific expeditions to the continent.
The post screening discussion will feature Cloud Chamber Orchestra, Cynthia Henderson, and the archivists who discovered this rare film, Andres Levinson and Paula Didier Felix, from the Museo del Cine Archive Buenos Aires. The post screening discussion is moderated by Jonathon Ablard, History, Ithaca College, a specialist in Argentina.
This special performance and screening of Entre Los Hielos De Las Islas Orcadas is supported through the generosity of the Park Foundation.
