Title: What do brain scans, Mars rovers, online shopping and text mining have in common?

Abstract: Multidimensional, massive data sets are everywhere (from chemistry, to sociology, finance, geology, engineering and more!) In this talk, we present some neat tools from linear algebra that aid in the analysis of these massive sets of data. We'll cover several real-world applied problems that data scientists care about (image compression and de-blurring, facial recognition, document similarity mining, and recommender system construction) and show the (pretty easy!) underlying mathematics that powers these models. We will also talk about what types of jobs are out there for data scientists (and for mathematicians doing data science) and how to get started in the field.
