Paula Twomey, adjunct Spanish instructor in the DMLL, has published three new cultural readers for Level I and II secondary students with Teacher’s Discovery: Lecturas culturales de España, Lecturas culturales de México, and Lecturas culturales de Argentina. Each reader includes short stories, poems, legends, dramas, historical accounts, recipes, cultural traditions, sports and festivals that are authentic to each country. Each reading selection is supplemented by four activities that help students review the vocabulary and practice target language skills. In addition, students use the readings to research topics on the web, write personal reflections, answer comprehension questions, compare and contrast themes, and participate in communicative activities. All activities support the ACTFL Standards for World Language Learning in the 21st Century and the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Standards.
Twomey’s other titles published by Teacher’s Discovery include ¡Improvisaciones¡: 101 Situations with a Point of View, Un-Classic Fairy Tales in Spanish, Un-Classic Aesop’s Fables in Spanish, Charlemos y Escribamos. She also has two forthcoming titles: Great Spanish Art: Write About It, and ¡Ferias!: 20 Expo Fairs for Communication.
