Curatorial Synopsis:
"I started off as a documentarian. I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, very much concerned with telling the truth. It was convenient when the truth was pleasing to look at or when the story carried some degree of affect, but representing reality was paramount. Somewhere along the way, in both my own work and the work I admired, I found myself less and less interested with what the truth had to offer. It began with editing a roll of film more for style than content, caring more about how it showed than what it showed. The truth never disappeared, it just got pushed toward the back- ground, until finally it became merely a carrier or basis. Only once I realized that I was more drawn to fiction anchored in truth than truth itself, was I able to see that as a common thread connecting a great deal of the work I was drawn to. This exhibition highlights some exemplars of the notion of truth based fictions."
