Ithaca College online course --  Summer Session II (July 2 – August 3, 2017).

ENVS 25200 (also cross-listed as Philosophy 25200) is a critical examination of moral problems associated with humanity's effects on the environment.

ICC credits: Humanities perspective; Quest for a Sustainable Future theme.

Course Format: The course's flexible schedule is designed to accommodate students' various summer activities.  While there will be short daily reading and comprehension assignments, these can be done any time day or night.  That is, there is no particular time of day when all students are required to be online, so students will be able to make the course work with their job schedules.

Overview: We will explore questions regarding the moral status of animals, questions regarding the moral status of the environment more generally (e.g. does nature itself have an “intrinsic value” that we have a duty to respect?), and questions associated with global warming and sustainability and how these intersect with economic policy. These issues generate challenging and fundamental questions of moral philosophy: What is the basis of moral obligation? Do animals have rights? What is our responsibility to future generations of people who do not yet exist?Throughout the course we will examine competing views on each of these issues, so that students can formulate well-reasoned responses to the course’s questions.

Instructor: Craig Duncan
