The International Linguistic Association invited Asma Barlas (Politics) to give a plenary address at its 63rd annual conference on April 21.
This year's theme was Language and Religion and, in her talk, "Reading the Word in a Foreign Tongue," Barlas explored what it meant for her to propose a liberatory Qur'anic hermeneutics when she doesn't understand Arabic, the language of Islam's Scripture. The conference was held at St. John's University, New York: https://hallidaycentre.cityu.edu.hk:2443/ila/04_conference_2018.aspx
