Sophomore Nicole Pimental’s story, “Essential and Unrecognized,” which appeared on the front page of the April 6, 2017, issue of The Ithacan, has won the First Place Mark of Excellence Award in the General News Reporting category from the Northeast Region (Region 1) of the Society of Professional Journalists. The award was presented at the SPJ Region 1 conference at Temple University on April 22.

The story described the additional work many faculty of color take on by mentoring and serving as resources for a large number of students. It will now go on to compete against the winning stories from the other 11 SPJ regions for the National Mark of Excellence Award, which will be presented at the SPJ national conference in September.

In addition, junior Grace Elletson’s story “Bros, Sports and Sexism,” on the Ithaca College chapter of Barstool Sports, received a Finalist Award in the same category. The story appeared in the October 26, 2017, issue of the paper. Elletson was recently selected as editor in chief of The Ithacan for 2018–19.

The Ithacan also received a Finalist Award in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper category.
