Associate Professor and Chair of Art History Jennifer Jolly has published a book on art, tourism, and nation building in 1930s Mexico.  Creating Pátzcuaro, Creating Mexico: Art, Tourism, and Nation Building under Lázaro Cárdenas (University of Texas, 2018) examines how celebrated Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas mobilized cultural patronage to transform the small city of Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, into a center for national tourism.

Professor Jolly's book demonstrates how the creation of Pátzcuaro was formative for Mexico; not only did it provide an early model for regional economic and cultural development, but it also helped establish some of Mexico’s most enduring national myths, rituals, and institutions.

A presentation of selected slides and commentary followed by a wine reception will take place at Buffalo Street Books on Friday, May 11th at 5 pm.
