Chris Sinton, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences, is the primary author on the paper “Age Progressive Volcanism Opposite Nazca Plate Motion: Insights from Seamounts and Drowned Islands on the Northeastern Margin of the Galápagos Platform”.
With colleagues from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Prof. Sinton found that, of seven extinct submarine volcanoes northeast of the Galápagos Platform, four are drowned islands. What makes these volcanoes unique is their progression of age is opposite what is expected on a typical hotspot system where volcanoes are progressively older away from the hotspot.
