Fall Break is a great opportunity to get out and give back! That’s why the Office of Student Engagement offers students the chance to travel and serve during IC’s October Break (Oct 18 – 20) . This year’s Alternative Fall Break options include Buffalo, NY, or Harrisburg, PA.
Food Bank of Western NY and Journey’s End Refugee Services (JERS),
Buffalo, NY
Students volunteering in Buffalo, NY, will work closely with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Journey’s End Refugee Services. At the Food Bank, volunteers will help with food intake and package preparation, as well as learn more about how Food Banks operate and rely on volunteers to make things happen. With Journey’s End Refugee Services, volunteers will learn more about how this and other organizations assist refugees in a variety of situations. Students will have time in the evening on Friday to visit Niagara Falls or some other nearby hot spot!
Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA)
Harrisburg, PA
Those who wish to travel south to Harrisburg, PA, will be working with CATRA, an organization that provides therapeutic horse riding to people of all ages who can benefit from it emotionally, mentally, and physically. CATRA relies heavily on the time and energy of volunteers for everything from assisting with lessons, grooming horses, stocking hay and cleaning around horse stalls. Students will have time Friday evening to explore the area around CATRA.
Trips are just $75.00, and that includes everything! Or students can apply to be an Alternative Break trip leader and participate for 25 bucks! All applications submitted before October 1 are guaranteed to be reviewed. Applications submitted later than October 1 will be reviewed until the program is full.
