Professor Timothy A. Johnson (Chair of the Department of Music Theory, History, and Composition) will present “Lines and Points: Caroline Shaw’s Partita for 8 Voices and Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawings” at the Post-1945 Music Analysis Special Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory.
Professor Johnson discusses musical influences of Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings, featured in a long-term exhibit at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), North Adams, MA. Shaw's Partita bears evidence of her engagement with these visual artworks in terms of content, construction, and conception—extending well beyond the textual borrowings on the surface.
This presentation (on November 2, 2018, in San Antonio, TX) stems from earlier work presented at the Ithaca Music Forum in Fall 2017 and is an outgrowth of work done on this piece in collaboration with Associate Professor Sara Haefeli and Assistant Professor Crystal Peebles, each of whom have developed their own approaches to Shaw’s Partita. The three colleagues’ project developed from the 2016 opening concert and masterclasses by Roomful of Teeth at the Ithaca College School of Music. Prof. Johnson’s work on this project is supported by the CFRD program of the Center for Faculty Excellence.
