Dear Students:
I am writing to all of you to ask for your help in trying to reduce late night noise in the South Hill neighborhood. In September, I had the opportunity to attend the Welcome Back Student BBQ that the IC/Community Work Group hosts each fall for our off-campus students to meet their local South Hill neighbors. It was a wonderful event attended by a nice mixture of students and year round residents. Some of the neighbors in attendance included a couple who ran a bed and breakfast out of their home for many years, an IC faculty member who lives on South Hill and a couple of Cornell Graduate students who have two young children. All of them were very excited to meet the IC students, and spoke very positively about the energy that the return of the students brings to the local area. However, each of them also shared concerns about the noise created by students walking through the neighborhood late at night when they, and/or their children, are trying to sleep.
As you walk through the local neighborhoods, please be considerate of the noise you are making as grandparents, parents and young children are trying to sleep. Please also be careful to avoid damaging peoples’ yards or property. As it is getting dark earlier and the weather is turning colder, you have another great option to take TCAT Route 11 bus to get to and from the commons. You can download a free mobile app, Bus Tracker, that provides real time bus information, from the TCAT website www.tcatbus.com.
One of our hopes is that your college experience prepares you to be a positive member of the global community. You can begin by being a positive member of the local Ithaca Community. The South Hill Neighbors greatly appreciate your consideration.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Solt Prunty
Dean of Students
