The Department of Anthropology and Art Department are offering a new cross-listed course in Spring 2019. ANTH 19100/ART 19100 Introduction to Paleo-art combines the science of human and human ancestor anatomy with the creative arts of sculpture and drawing.

In this course, students explore the field of paleo-art, the reconstruction and depiction of prehistoric life in sculpture, drawings and paintings based on available scientific evidence. Focusing especially on hominins and dinosaurs, students learn musculo-skeletal anatomy, examine the scientific basis for reconstructions, including clues from the fossil record, and practice skills of molding and casting in life-like materials. Hands-on projects include the reconstruction of a human face over a skull and a reconstruction of an extinct organism.

This course is taught by John Gurche, renowned paleo-artist, whose reconstructions are featured in the Hall of Human Origins at the National Museum of Natural History.
