Jen Tennant just published an essay, “The Great Work Begins Again: Angels in America in the Age of Trump,” in the literary magazine The Smart Set.
It is a piece of narrative nonfiction that asks the reader to think about how historical context affects how we experience a play. Angels in America was written and takes place in a historical moment when HIV/AIDS was a death sentence. Currently, because of medical advances, it is a chronic illness for those with access to health care. The policies of the Trump administration, however, have the potential to halt progress against the disease and make the play particularly relevant once again.
