The Office of Student Engagement is offering the chance to travel and volunteer the week after finals in three different locations. Each trip will focus on a different them and will offer students unique opportunities to learn and serve. This is a unique opportunity to start summer off by making a difference!
The trip locations for 2019 include:
Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. This trip will give students the opportunity to volunteer with the National Park Service. Students will assist the NPS with a variety of projects around the park, including camping site maintenance, trail stewardship, and other beautification projects. Students should expect to moderately strenuous work throughout the week. Students will have at least one day to enjoy and explore Mt. Desert Island. Students spend the end of the week enjoying time in Bar Harbor! This trip will involve some camping at an Acadia National Park campsite. All necessary camping equipment is provided by Ithaca College. 5 spaces available. $150 total trip fee per participant / $50 total trip fee for leaders.
Salamanca Youth Center in Salamanca, New York, is located on the Seneca Nation of Indians Allegany Territory in western New York. This organization provides after school recreational and educational programming for at-risk youth in Salamanca and the surrounding area. Volunteers help youth ages 5 - 18 with homework and participate in several of the after school programs offered by the center. This is a great fit for anyone interested in working with kids in an energetic environment. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about the Allegany Territory and the history of the Iroquois (haudenosaunee) in New York, and will have one day to enjoy the area. 6 spaces available. $125 total trip fee per participant / $50 total trip fee for leaders.
Boston Living Center (BLC) and The Food Project (TFP) in Boston, Massachusetts. Students on this trip will have the opportunity to explore the connection between wellness and food access. Boston Living Center is a nonprofit organization that fosters the wellness of all HIV positive people and responds to the changing needs of the HIV/AIDS community through education, treatment information and support services. The Food Project seeks to engage young people in personal and social change through sustainable agriculture. Students will learn about how BLC fosters wellness among those affected by HIV/AIDS in the Boston area through a variety of social services. With The Food Project, students will learn how TFP distributes healthy food through shared agriculture, farmer's markets, and donation networks into neighborhoods where it is difficult to access. Two days will be spent helping BLC serve meals to community members in need, and two days will be spent working with The Food Project. Students will have one day on the trip to enjoy the Boston area. 6 spaces available. $150 total trip fee per participant / $50 total trip fee for leaders.
