Ithaca College Department of Athletics had a fantastic weekend, with four teams capturing Liberty League championships and one team securing a Mideast Regional championship.
“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes and coaches this past weekend,” said Direct of Athletics Susan Bassett ’79. “All of our teams competed at the highest level at the most important time of the season and it resulted in five championships. It was also exciting that four of them occurred on our campus and we were able to share the success with the IC community. I would also like to send a special thanks to our operations team and all of our campus partners in helping us host numerous conference championships. All of our events were a huge success and IC provided a great experience of the student-athletes and visiting spectators.”
The women’s basketball team defeated RIT, 75-73, in overtime on Sunday to take home the Liberty League championship inside Ben Light Gymnasium. Senior Annie Giannone made the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining in overtime. Senior Meghan Pickell poured in a career-high 23 points to earn the title of Most Outstanding Player. With the win, the Bombers secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they will take on the SUNY Poly Wildcats Friday night at 7 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
The women’s swimming and diving team won its first-ever Liberty League title this past Saturday by just two points at the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium. The team totaled 1,254.5 points over the four-day championship. Graduate student Anna Belson was named Liberty League Women’s Diver of the Meet after winning the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
The men’s track and field team won its second consecutive Liberty League championship this past weekend inside the Athletics and Events Center. The Bombers totaled 176.5 points over the course of the meet and won the championship over RPI by 33.5 points. Junior Daniel Harden-Marshall was named Co-Field Performer of the Meet after he set a new Liberty League and Ithaca College record in the long jump with a mark of 7.22 meters.
The women’s track and field team also won the Liberty League championship, totaling 241.5 points to secure the title. The win marks the 12th consecutive indoor title for the Bombers. The 241.5 total points are the second-most in Liberty League indoor history. IC produced five individual champions over the two-day event. Freshman Logan Bruce broke the Liberty League record in the pentathlon with a performance of 3,348 points.
The wrestling team came away with the 2019 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional team championship at Brockport on Saturday. Six Bombers qualified for the national tournament set to be held in Roanoke, Virginia beginning Friday, March 8. Senior Ferdinand Mase, junior Ben Brisman, redshirt-junior Austin Whitney, senior Jake Ashcraft, senior Jake O’Brien and freshman Eze Chukweuezi all punched their tickets to the NCAA Division III Championship.
