New Fall 2019 Course: The Power of Words (PHIL 26300)

This course explores philosophical theories about how language works and how it shapes the ways that we understand the world, communicate with and treat each other. In particular, this course focuses on pragmatic contents and the power of words beyond their literal meanings in various contexts.

The course will count for an ICC Diversity designation (application pending). Toward that end, it will discuss the following questions: 

• How do racist, sexist, ethnic and homophobic epithets acquire their force?
• In what ways do derogative terms oppress, harm and silence targeted minority group members?
• Does violent / misogynistic pornography equal hate speech against women?
• Should we regulate hate speech and pornography?

Time: MWF 11:00-11:50
