Statement on the recent San Diego synagogue attack

04/28/19

Contributed by Austin Reid

Our hearts are broken by the news of yet another horrific attack that took place during religious services, yesterday morning at the Chabad of Poway near San Diego

Our pain is compounded by knowing that these events are becoming commonplace. Jews in America; Christians in Sri Lanka; Muslims in New Zealand. Our continuing deep concern for the security of Jewish communities around the United States and the world is intertwined with our concern for other faith communities and all individuals and communities that are targeted by hate and fear.

The safety of our community is always our top priority. Hillel is working with the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life and Ithaca College to ensure the safety of our community.

We are also working together with Rabbi Josh and Andi Krish of Chabad at Ithaca College to support our community. We look forward to assisting them as they facilitate Jewish ritual for hundreds of Ithaca College Students in response to Saturday's attack.

Tomorrow, Monday, April 9 from 12 to 2 Hillel and Chabad will be holding drop in hours inside Muller Chapel for the community to process Saturday's events and observe mitzvot.

Then for Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday, May 3 at 6PM Hillel and Chabad are lighting Shabbos Candles together in Muller Chapel.

Please know that we at Hillel are available anytime for students and others. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Executive Director, Lauren Goldberg lgoldberg2@ithaca.edu), Springboard Fellow, Austin Reid (areid1@ithaca.edu), or Chaplain Abbe Lyons (alyons@ithaca.edu). You may also reach Chabad at Ithaca College through Andi Krisch at andimo84@gmail.com or Rabbi Josh Krisch at krisch613@gmail.com

We encourage you to take care of yourselves, your friends, and loved ones. We are always here, in love and solidarity.

 Sincerely,

The Hillel at Ithaca College staff
