Therapeutic Recreation students from the School of HSHP hosted a Depressed Cake Shop under the supervision of Catherine Gooch, CTRS, Clinical Assistant Professor.

Therapeutic Recreation students from the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies planned and implemented a Depressed Cake Shop in Ithaca on Sunday, April 28, 2019.  Depressed Cake Shops are "pop-up bakeries" that is a nationwide effort that strives to decrease the negative stigma that is sometimes associated with mental health issues.  This program was designed as an advocacy project for the course:  Administration and Advocacy of Therapeutic Recreation.

Money raised through the Depressed Cake Shop was donated to the Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service of Tompkins County.  Despite near freezing temperatures and rain the TR students sold bakery items and distributed mental health resources to members of the community, over $400 was raised!  Community members- from families, social workers, clinical psychologists, and educators offered many praises for the event and supported the initiative and the discussion around mental health issues and the effects on our society.

This innovative community effort was also made possible with collaboration and participation with the Cornell Cooperative Extension and the 4-H Duck Race.

Students involved include:  Amanda Quach, Gabrielle Dower, Laura Bonerbo, Laura Castelein, Sofia Menegay, Patricia Aburto, Kelsey Benedek.
