For the first time in over 10 years, Ramadan will fall during the academic year. This year Ramadan begins on Monday, May 6th and ends on Monday, June 3rd. Eid al Fitr, a major Islamic celebratory event indicating the end of Ramadan, for 2019 will be on Tuesday, June 4th.
General Practices during Ramadan:
The physical fast takes place daily from sunrise to sunset, whereby Muslims refrain from consuming any food or drinks as well as refraining from any behavior that may negate the reward of fasting. Generally, those observing Ramadan will gather for a pre-fast meal before dawn called suhoor, and at dusk, the fast is broken with a meal called iftar. Both meals may be communal, but the iftar is a social affair when family and friends gather to eat and welcome the needy with food. During Ramadan, Muslims typically observe increased offerings of salat (prayer), especially during late night hours.
