It is a great pleasure to announce the appointment of Professor Gordon Rowland as the new Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE). This position is a key resource in supporting and implementing the Imagining Ithaca Strategic Plan. I am delighted to appoint an exceptionally talented and well-qualified individual to fill this essential role. Presently a Professor and Program Director in the Park School of Communications, Dr. Rowland will begin a three-year term as Director, effective August 16, 2019.
Our new CFE Director received his Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University following his graduate work in Music Theory at Ithaca College. He brings 37 years of classroom experience to the Center with extensive experience in mentoring, research, and scholarship.
He is a respected author, co-author and editor of both books and book chapters, winning an outstanding book award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology for co-authoring Issues in Technology, Learning, and Instructional Design. He has given conference presentations and invited talks throughout the United States as well as in other countries. He serves on the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Design for Learning, and is a past Advisory Board member on the Handbook on Research in Educational Communications and Technology and the Sea Education Association (SEA).
Dr. Rowland was an integral part of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee as well as co-chair of the Evolution Working Group. He is co-director of the IC2 Project which offers a set of one-credit short courses on integrative learning, co-chair of the Faculty Grievance Committee and also serves on the Research Council. His past service includes being a member of the Honorary Doctorate Committee, the Fulbright Review Committee, the All-College Tenure and Promotion Committee, the Interdisciplinary Courses Task Force, the Faculty Handbook Amendment Committee and numerous other all–college, school, and departmental committees throughout his tenure at Ithaca College.
An experienced classroom teacher, Dr. Rowland has taught courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels in large and small classes, developed new courses, and supervised students in service learning experiences. He also has substantial experience working with graduate programs. He has received numerous awards, most recently a 2019 Faculty Excellence Award and served the Center for Faculty Excellence as a Faculty in Residence from 2014-2017.
Dr. Rowland’s vision on the engagement of faculty in arts and humanities as well as the sciences is impressive. He is passionate about helping faculty members develop holistically as well as professionally. He is excited to bring his experiences to bear in working with the CFE team to enhance as well as advance faculty development in the areas of teaching, learning, research, scholarship, mentorship, and leadership.
Please join me in welcoming Professor Rowland as the new director of our Center for Faculty Excellence. I look forward to working with him to create new opportunities for all faculty members through the CFE.
