The inaugural performance of the newly established Manley and Doriseve Thaler Vocal Concert Series will feature mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, with pianist Craig Terry, on Tuesday September 17 at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall. Ms. Blythe is one of the most celebrated opera and concert singers of her generation, and has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and at the Tanglewood and Mostly Mozart festivals. Ms. Blythe will also give a master class on Wednesday September 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.
The season continues on Tuesday, October 29, when violinist Benjamin Baker gives a special guest recital, with support from the Office of the President. Mr. Baker was the First Prize winner at the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, has been touring the world ever since, and will perform with pianist Daniel Lebhardt at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. He will offer a master class the following day, on Wednesday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m.
The Louis K. Thaler Concert Violinist Series will return on Tuesday, November 19 with Isabelle Faust on violin and Alexander Melnikov on piano at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. A versatile artist with a thorough expertise in the historical contexts of her wide-ranging repertoire, Ms. Faust will perform an all-Beethoven program for her Ithaca appearance, in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
The winning jazz composition in the David P. (’60) and Susan Wohlhueter Composition Contest will be performed by guest saxophonist Braxton Cook and the Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mike Titlebaum on Saturday, December 7 at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall.
In the spring semester, the Rachel S. Thaler Concert Pianist Series welcomes Nikolai Lugansky for a concert on Tuesday February 4 at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall. A regular recitalist the world over, working with top level conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, Yuri Temirkanov, and Mikhail Pletnev, Mr. Lugansky has been described by Gramophone as “the most trailblazing and meteoric performer of all”. He will perform three Beethoven piano sonatas, as well as Prélude, Choral et Fugue by César Franck. A master class will be held on Monday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.
Also in February, the Robert G. Boehmler Community Foundation Series will present Cuarteto Latinoamericano, for more than thirty years the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. Founded in Mexico in 1982, the Latin Grammy Award-winning Cuarteto has toured extensively throughout the world, and has premiered more than one hundred works written for them. Their performance will be on Friday, February 7 at 8:15 p.m., with a master class on Thursday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m., in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.
Wrapping up the season, the Shirley and Chas Hockett Chamber Music Concert Series will present The King’s Singers on Sunday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m. in Ford Hall. This renowned vocal sextet recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of their founding by six former choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge, and are continuing to tour the world’s great stages performing in the English choral tradition, as well as popular music and commissioned works, with their unique British charm. The King’s Singers will hold a master class after the concert, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.
