The Park School invites the campus community to a panel of faculty, students, and alumni discussing the media’s current and emerging role in our democracy. Panelists include:
Raza Rumi is the director of Ithaca College’s Park Center for Independent Media and is also teaching in our journalism degree program. Mr. Rumi is a policy analyst and journalist from Pakistan whose work brought him under the surveillance of Islamists and their patrons in Pakistan; he narrowly survived an assassination attempt but his driver died. Within weeks, Raza left Pakistan and fled to the United States. Since May 2014, he has been a fellow at number of U.S. institutes and academic centers for religion and world affairs.
Ann-Marie Adams (Instructor, Strategic Communication) has experience in corporate communications, government affairs, public relations, media relations, non-profit leadership, and advocacy. She views literacy (traditional and digital) as a critical component to creating opportunity, both socially and economically. She has worked as a lobbyist for Cornell and on many civic and political campaigns.
Idrissou Mora Kpai (Assistant Professor, Media Arts, Sciences and Studies) is an award winning filmmaker whose films have been screened world-wide at numerous prestigious festivals, such as Berlin, Rotterdam, Vienna, Milano, Busan, Sheffield. Born in Benin, West Africa, Idrissou has made a name for himself with his social documentaries tackling post-colonial African societies, and issues of racism, identities, and national borders
Rob Flaherty (TVR '13) is digital director for the Beto for America Campaign. While still a student he helped our current Ithaca Mayor, Svante Myrick, with his successful campaign to be the youngest and first mayor of color in Ithaca. He was also deputy digital coordinator for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign.
Allison Frisch (Assistant Professor, Journalism) teaches journalism innovation, visual journalism and news editing. Before her career in higher education, she was the editor-in-chief of the York Dispatch in York, PA and an editor for upstate NY newspapers.
Malick Mercier (Journalism ‘22) is already a social media influencer. He's a host of this news on IGTV and he hosted Instagram’s official news coverage of the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C. on @Instagram -- the largest Instagram account with a following of 250+ million.
Jim Miller (TVR '85) is the Executive Director of Brave New Films. Most recently he produced the documentary 'Making A Killing: Guns, Greed, and the NRA. In addition, he produced the docs ‘Koch Brothers Exposed’, ‘War on Whistleblowers’ and ‘Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars’.
