Assistant Professor of Physics Jerome Fung and former Wellesley College student Samantha Hoang recently published a paper entitled “Computational assessment of an effective-sphere model for characterizing colloidal fractal aggregates with holographic microscopy” in the Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer.
Their work used computer simulations to explore the validity of an optical technique for characterizing the structure of random aggregates of small particles. The technique could be applied to protein aggregates, which are relevant in the food and pharmaceutical industries, or to soot.
