SEPT 19, 6pm: Roots of Migration: Report back from El Salvador and Colombia, T.C. Public Library downtown

09/16/19

Contributed by Patricia Rodriguez

THU Sept 19: 6-pm-7:30 @ TCPL (Borg-Warner West room); report back from El Salvador and Colombia. Join us for a conversation with Patricia Rodriguez (Politics Prof., IC) and Beth Harris (School of the Americas Watch) who went to El Salvador together on a migration delegation with US-El Salvador Sister Cities in July. Patricia also went to visit the Women’s Movement for the Defense of Life, in Cajibio, Colombia.

There are things that about immigration and about ‘peace’ and development in Latin America that the mainstream discussions on these issues are leaving undiscussed, and that need to be part of an analysis of why people are being pushed out of their territories and find little support for any alternative but to migrate.

The presenters will also share about a project proposal centered on strengthening solidarity with communities fighting extractivism (part of the School of the Americas Watch) in Colombia and Honduras, and about an upcoming Continental Youth Encuentro in El Salvador.

This event this Thursday will be a fundraiser event for funds to the women’s group in Colombia, and for travel expenses for a local youth to go to El Salvador. Menu items include tinga de pollo, cheese and veggie empanadas, and tamales, as well as arroz con leche. Please come support!

Sponsored by Friends of the Movimiento de Mujeres por la Vida and IC’s student group Committee for Decolonial Affairs (CODA). This event is open to the public. For accommodations, please contact prodriguez@ithaca.edu
