Ithaca College Associate Professor of Education Dr. Nia Nunn was cited by author and activist Dr. Bettina Love as an exemplary abolitionist educator at the “Diversity Symposium of Thought Leaders,” sponsored in July by the The New York State Council of School Superintendents Commission on Diversity and Inclusion.

Dr. Nunn's commendation comes in the context of Love's widely studied concept of abolitionist education, which is predicated on the beliefs and actions of teachers to demand and fight for an educational system where all students thrive, not simply survive.

Rooted in a Black feminist/Womanist foundation, Dr. Nunn’s work at Ithaca College includes participatory and performative methods of teaching to creatively engage students and cultivate a desire to learn more and make a healthy and transformative contribution in society.

Her work as a board member at Southside Community Center involves extensive outreach with local children, families, artists, college students, teachers and administrators to create equitable classrooms and communal, civically-engaged schools that teach and practice social justice.

Congratulations, Dr. Nia!
