SGC General Body Meetings are open to the public and take place every week on Monday from 7-9 p.m. in Taughannock Falls room on the third floor of Campus Center.

Senate Meeting Agenda

Monday, 09/23, 2019 7:00pm –Taughannock Falls Meeting Room

 

SUMMARY:

· Speaker Lara Hamburger of the Advocacy Center discussed the Center’s role on campus and Ithaca community. SGC will continue to support and expand Advocacy Center operations on campus.

· 7 members of the Appropriations Committee were confirmed unanimously by the Senate.

· Souymaa Joshi (2023) confirmed unanimously for Senator of school of Humanities and Sciences.

B. Speaker: Lara Hamburger- The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County

i. What does the Advocacy Center do on campus?

1. Serves people who have been affected by sexual and relationship violence

a. Can be for yourself or for other people, including friends and family

b. Secondary support

ii. 24-hour confidential hotline number is main way people can reach the advocacy center

1. Confidentiality and people never have to identify themselves

2. Only exception to confidentiality is child abuse, suicidal or homicidal thoughts

iii. Work one-on-one with an advocate for support

1. Emotional support, filing reports, filling out paperwork, going to the hospital

iv. General role: educator

1. First year seminars

2. Conversations on changing the culture

3. Violence Prevention Committee

4. Responding to student groups and needs

v. Alex: who are the advocates?

1. Some are licensed social workers, most are people who have done work in the field for extended time

2. Certified NYS rape counselors

vi. Specific programs:

1. Confidential shelter

2. No population specific guidelines, all ages, all gender identities, no matter when they had the experiences, no matter immigration status

a. All services are free

vii. How does the advocacy center get funding?

1. Violence Against Women Act

2. Federal and state funding

3. NYS is very supportive of funding

viii. NYS education law 129B

1. All colleges and universities must have certain things available to students, including confidential resources

a. Suggested to work with organizations like the advocacy center

2. Definition of affirmative consent in student handbook

ix. Advocacy Center on Campus:

1. New student orientations

2. Responding to what the college asks of the Center

3. Emma: adult sexual assault counselor and advocate, gets put in touch with students through a hotline

4. Title IX

5. Office hours: 11-1 on Tuesdays in the Chapel

a. Talk to Center about any concerns

b. Student activists

c. Educational or emotional support

6. Support group: Thursday evenings for anyone who identifies as a survivor of violence

a. Student government helped advocate for this kind of support group

7. Henry: how do you initiate Title IX?

a. Go with students to Title IX to have initial conversation

b. Advocate for students with Title IX coordinators

i. Timing, information, and acting as a middle man

c. Investigation adviser- another person in the room for the investigation

8. Connor: everyone takes 2 posters and getting them in common spaces around campus, digital copy on social media and having SGC put information on Intercom

9. Sebastian: including POC on campus, especially POC women

a. Difficult to come out to talk about

b. Yetunde: working with Ourstory is not History

i. Mental health improvement on campus

10. Connor: how does the advocacy center address the POC community?

a. What are the particular needs of communities of color?

b. Full transparency: white organization and we recognize that

i. Visible parts of this movement has been lead by white women

ii. Try to show up for other organizations in the community

11. Alex: how do we help students find the right fit for them? How do we put the Center in the social fabric of the college?

12. How do we address culture change on campus? How do we have challenging conversations? How do we make our community safe?
