ENGL 29700 01 Professional Development: The Graphic Novel Advisory Board ; CRN: 23336; 1.5 credits
INSTRUCTOR: Kelly Hallisy
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a community-service course in which IC students use a variety of methods to promote the reading of graphic novels by children and teens. It is especially recommended for students going into education, library sciences, publishing, marketing books or comics, or working with community organizations. For more information see: https://www.icgraphicnovels.org/
Some of the ways that we promote the use of graphic novels/comics are:
1) Visit rural libraries, assess their comics/graphic novels collection, and recommend additional titles they should purchase.
2) Read and assess graphic novels for children and teens to add to our database of recommended books.
3) Write book reviews for inclusion in our monthly newsletter. https://www.icgraphicnovels.org/october-2019-newsletter
4) Do presentations at local events to give information on specific titles (like Black Panther) and to discuss specific aspects of graphic novels (like graphic novels that contained disabled/differently abled characters).
5) Create and staff reading events for the public, including the Graphic Novel reading room at ITHACON, and “reading parties” in downtown Ithaca.
