On Thursday, November 7th, at 5 p.m., Professor Leslie Lewis (former Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, Ithaca College; current Professor of English, Goucher College) will deliver a lecture entitled, “Liberatory Education: Creating Space for Inclusive Pedagogy,” as part of the Peggy Ryan Williams Difficult Dialogues series. The talk will take place in the Haines Forum, in the Peggy Ryan Williams Center, with a reception immediately following.
In her talk, which is based on an essay recently published in The Hedgehog Review, Professor Lewis will make the case for liberal arts education re-envisioned to be inclusive, liberatory, and ultimately reparative. In making this argument, she considers her own education, which moved from the study of “great books” as an undergraduate to race-and-gender focused doctoral work in African American literature. Ultimately, Professor Lewis asks us to recommit liberal education to liberation for us all, and discusses the questions we need to ask and answer to do this good work.
