Contributed by Brandy Hawley

Shane Bauer will speak about his book “American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishmentthat weaves a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons dating back to the decades before the Civil War.

Bauer's work is an alarming exposé of a for-profit prison in Louisiana where he worked as a guard and witnessed the distressing conditions and how corrections overtime have turned into a profit-making enterprise.

This book was named as New York Times Book Review’s “10 Best Books of 2018,” as well as one of President Barack Obama’s favorites of 2018. “American Prison is a compelling critique of America’s complex system of mass incarceration and the formidable forces that drive it.

Bauer is an award-winning journalist who is currently a senior reporter with Mother Jones magazine. He was the recipient of an Izzy Award in 2017 for his outstanding contribution to independent media.
