A New Way to Report Phishing Messages

Phishing messages may now be reported to IT’s Office of Information Security using the new “Report Message” button in Outlook’s Home or Message toolbars on Windows and macOS. This replaces our previous “Report as Phishing” add-in.

Phishing messages are a subset of junk or spam messages that are designed to deceive recipients. Usually the goal is to trick you into clicking a link, opening an attachment, or responding with information. Linked web sites and attachments may contain malware or may be designed to convince you to enter information. We often see phishing messages with links to fake login pages designed to collect usernames and passwords. Simply having read a message is almost never enough to lead to a compromise—the risk comes with opening attachments, clicking links, or responding.

Reporting phishing messages is valuable and enables us to reduce the impact phishing attacks have on your fellow students, faculty, and staff. The new feature integrates more seamlessly with our response capabilities, while also reducing cost.

Please reach out to the IT Service Desk at servicedesk@ithaca.edu or 607-274-1000 with any questions about this new capability.
