Jenna Heffron, PhD, OTR/L (HSHP; Occupational Therapy) recently published a book chapter on peer mentoring and support to facilitate home and community participation for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The chapter provides an overview of the history and theory of peer mentoring and support, an overview of a wide range of peer mentoring programs for adults with I/DD, a case example based on an intervention research project completed by Heffron and her co-authors, and concludes with implications for the OT profession as well as a discussion about how peer mentoring and support can occur informally and outside of traditional rehabilitation/social service settings.
