Census statistical data is important and is used in a variety of ways to improve your local community. Help Tompkins County access it’s fair share of over $675 billion in federal funds and even more in state funds by making sure you are counted! Tompkins County has a large population of college students – a group that has traditionally been undercounted in the Census. You matter to this community.
Here are some ways that census data are used:
- Drawing federal, state, and local legislative districts
- Reapportioning seats in the House of Representatives
- Forecasting future transportation needs
- Planning for hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and the local of other health services
- Directing funds for services for people in poverty
- Estimating the number of people displaced by natural disasters.
- Planning future government strategies
- Drawing school district boundaries
- Planning budgets for government at all levels.
- Establishing fair market rents and enforcing fair lending practices.
- Determining areas eligible for housing assistance and rehabilitation loans.
For the first time, the Census will be able to be completed on-line.
