Now that most of the IC community has been learning, teaching and working remotely for a few weeks utilizing best practices for conducting meetings will help ensure the best experience possible. This is especially true for back to back meetings.
On campus back to back meetings have a normal pause between each meeting as individuals normally have to walk to their next meeting. When arriving at a meeting there is also typically a few moments at the beginning when you are waiting for everyone that allows for casual conversation among participants. Within the on-campus environment these casual breaks between meetings may frequently go unnoticed as we go from meeting to meeting; however, in the remote work environment the benefit of these types of pauses between each meeting becomes very apparent.
To help alleviate the 'back to back meeting syndrome' try scheduling the end of each meeting so that the meetings will conclude 5 minutes before the end of the hour or half hour. This slight adjustment will have little impact on the meeting itself and go a long way towards ensuring a brief but necessary break between meetings.
This article is part of a continuing series we're calling IT@IC Remotely Thinking, consisting of 'best practices and tips' presented by the Information Technology department to enhance your remote IC teaching, learning and working experience.
