Prof. Jolly's book, Creating Pátzcuaro, Creating Mexico: Art, Tourism, and Nation Building Under Lázaro Cárdenas (Austin: University of Texas Press, 2018), explores the artistic and cultural patronage of celebrated Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas which transformed a small Michoacán city, Pátzcuaro, into a popular center for national tourism in the 1930s and created enduring myths for the celebration of Mexican nationalism.

The award committee was "extremely impressed with the depth of scholarship and quality of analysis ... wove[n] into such a beautifully written text." Creating Pátzcuaro, Creating Mexico was also awarded the Best Book Award by the Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies (MACLAS) in 2019 and she was scheduled to address the group as their keynote speaker in March 2020.
