Walter Byongsok Chon, Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy and Theatre Studies in the Theatre Arts Department, publishes his chapter “The Stakes of Expanding a Cultural Landscape: Dramaturging, Adapting and Performing Gao Xingjian’s The Other Shore” in the book, Diversity, Inclusion, and Representation in Contemporary Dramaturgy: Case Studies from the Field (Routledge Press).
Abstract for his chapter:
Gao Xingjian’s play, The Other Shore, originally scheduled to premiere at the Beijing People’s Art Theatre in 1986, was suspended in the midst of preparing for production for fear of government sanctions. Chon’s article focuses on the Yale Cabaret production of the play in 2010 and discusses the various dramaturgical stages, methodologies and strategies that were used to present the play in a new historical, geographical, and cultural context. Embracing diverse dramaturgy through the whole process, this production creates a world that both reflects specific Chinese culture and speaks with truth for many cultures.
