Four Athletic Training Faculty from the Department of Exercise Science & Athletic Training have been quite active in delivering professional education webinars to local and national sports medicine and human performance professionals during the COVID-19 quarantine.
In response to the COVID-19 lockdown, Head Athletic Trainer and Associate AD of Sports Medicine at Syracuse University, Brad Pike, MS, PT, ATC, arranged a series of continuing/professional education for athletic trainers, physicians, physical therapists, and strength & conditioning specialists from upstate NY and down the Atlantic seaboard. Professionals and clinicians from Ithaca College, Syracuse's home conference, the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), and the Ivy League were invited to the daily, Zoom based educational events, with attendance exceeding 60 or 70 different individuals. Several of our athletic training staff and faculty, and a few of our program alumna and alumnus were in attendance as well, from as far away as Providence, RI and Durham, NC.
Four Ithaca College Athletic Training faculty were invited to present 3 different 90' sessions as part of Syracuse University's COVID-19 interprofessional professional development program, highlighting the expertise and scholarship of our program faculty to a very large and diverse regional audience:
In addition, Head Athletic Trainer and Associate AD of Sport Performance at Cornell University, Bernard DePalma, invited IC's Head Athletic Trainer, Mike Matheny, MS, ATC to provide a continuing education seminar to his faculty and staff last week. Clinical Professor Matheny presented "Recognition and Management of Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction" via Zoom to the Cornell Sports Medicine staff.
Responses to all 4 events were overwhelmingly positive, the follow up Q & A sessions were lively and enriching, and a very bright light was shone on the Ithaca College Athletic Training Education Program and Department of Exercise Science & Athletic Training.
