 RLST 36000 Women and Islam

This course explores norms, discourses and practices related to gender and sexuality in Muslim societies and communities in their historical dimensions and contemporary expressions. Through a study of historical primary sources and contemporary film, art, and music, we focus on the link between religion and gender through exploration and analysis of foundational religious texts, legal interpretations, and religious practices in diverse Muslim contexts. The course emphasizes the interplay of historical developments and contemporary expressions and foregrounds the agency of Muslim women in assessing, challenging, changing and/or preserving their roles in Muslim societies. It relates the study of women and gender in Islam to the larger fields of women in religion(s) and women and gender studies.
