Dear IC Community,

I want to take the opportunity to let you know that I could not just stand by and not say anything in regards to the tragic and unwarranted death of George Floyd.  While my words may not be perfect, silence is the same as supporting the actions and I refuse to be silent.  I’m saddened, confused, and angry, and I stand with all of those who are speaking out against this horrific and unfathomable situation.

These violent actions are not condoned or tolerated within the Office of Public Safety, these actions do not align with any mission or values within the Office of Public Safety, and it certainly isn’t part of ANY training that the officers within the Office of Public Safety receive.  Law enforcement as a whole has had and will continue to have hard work to do with building and maintaining trust within its communities.

I’m proud of the members of the Office of Public Safety, who will continue to serve and support the IC community with equal respect, accountability, and compassion. I condemn the actions of the involved officers in Minneapolis.  Whether you’re a police officer or not, when a human being says that they can’t breathe, you STOP.  I extend my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of George Floyd and to all those affected.

Sincerely,

Chief Bill Kerry

Director, Public Safety and Emergency Management
