Three Hundred Years of Service to the School of Music

The School of Music honors the following retiring faculty who, together, have contributed three hundred years of service to the institution. Best wishes and sincere thanks to these retiring faculty:

• Susan Avery, Associate Professor, Music Education, first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 2000. Her primary areas of teaching include choral and general music for Middle and High school ages, class voice for instrumentalists, supervising both Junior and Senior student teaching experiences and conducted the IC Campus Choral Ensemble. Susan twice hosted an international Lifelong Learning Music Symposium on the Ithaca College campus, which drew numerous researchers and leaders in the field of adult and community music. 
• Michael Galvan, Professor, Performance Studies (Clarinet), has taught at Ithaca College faculty since 1982. Michael was one of our two clarinet studio faculty and contributes richly to our local musical environment in his role as principal clarinet of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and as a member of the Symphoria orchestra. He has produced multiple generations of clarinet students over nearly four decades of service, has performed with numerous professional symphonies and chamber ensembles, and is a former president of the International Clarinet Association. 
• Carol McAmis, Professor, Performance Studies (Voice), first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1979. Carol taught studio voice majors and musical theatre majors and is well known for her pioneering work in the use of the Feldenkreis Method for singers. She has extensive experience and advanced training in this area and is a leader and innovator in combining movement, music, healing and wellness, making a unique and important contribution to our vocal pedagogy at IC for more than four decades. 
• Paige Morgan, Professor, Performance Studies (Oboe), first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1997.  Paige led the oboe studio, and also taught the courses Reaching Out to Audiences and Career Orientation, helping our students imagine possibilities for their lives and helping to turn them from their fears towards their dreams. Paige has been an important leader, researcher and advocate in the area of perfectionism and self-esteem, and her article, What is Good Enough? Struggling with Perfection appears currently in the International Double Reed Society Journal. 
• Merilee Nord, Assistant Professor, Music Theory, History, and Composition, first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1996. Merilee taught extensively throughout the theory curriculum, including coursework in aural skills, fundamentals, theory for musical theater majors, and form and analysis. She contributes to our local community through her work as organist and choir director of the Forest Home Chapel.
• Tim Nord, Associate Professor, Music Theory, History, and Composition, first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1992. He developed our curriculum in Music Technology and maintains our music technology facilities. He has taught in the areas of theory, sightsinging, and analysis. He is a nationally known presenter on a broad range of topics related to music and technology and has helped countless public school teachers in our region through his workshops in these areas. 
• David Pacun, Associate Dean, first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 2000. He was a member of the Music Theory, History and Composition faculty for twelve years before joining the senior administrative staff. David has been my greatly esteemed and invaluable partner in the deans’ office for all of my seven years. Read the full retirement announcement to the campus community here. 
• Alex Perialas, Associate Professor, Performance Studies (Sound Recording Technology), first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 2005 and has directed the Sound Recording Technology program from its inception. Alex is an Ithaca College alumnus, and the owner and chief engineer of Pyramid Sound Recording Studio, having produced over 300 major recordings including numerous Gold and Platinum records. He has played a leading role in numerous aspects of curricular development, strategic planning and facilities planning in the school. 
• Mark Radice, Professor, Music Theory, History and Composition, first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1987. Mark has an extensive publication, composition and performance record over many decades, and has served our musical communities as an organist and music director at several area churches. He was the meticulous and dedicated curator of the Karel Husa Archive & Gallery for Contemporary Music for sixteen years, and was instrumental in arranging for the preservation and safe installation of the collection at the Sibley Music Library. Mark has served as a visiting professor in China and is fluent in Mandarin. 
• Peter Rothbart, Professor, Music Theory, History, and Composition (Director, Electroacoustic Music), first came to the Ithaca College faculty in Fall of 1980. Peter has led our electroacoustic music studio, and taught courses on music and film, music in media, and directs the IC Klezmorim. He served as chair of the college’s Faculty Council, as well as on our own SOM council for many years.  He is an active composer, publisher and performer and has contributed to our regional musical richness as a member of the Binghamton Philharmonic, Hangar Theater pit, and others. 

Finally, some of you may know that in addition to having served as dean, I am a tenured member of the faculty, where I created the collaborative piano program in 1986 and taught until 1997. I am honored to rejoin the faculty as a Professor of Performance Studies on sabbatical leave during the Fall term of 2020 and will retire from IC in January of 2021.
