Writing Center Syllabus Inclusion

01/12/21

The Writing Center will continue to see students virtually this semester for synchronous online conferences.

As you're creating your syllabi, you may wish to include some of the following information about the Writing Center, a free service for all current Ithaca College students, faculty, and staff.

All writers can benefit from a second reader. At the Writing Center, trained faculty and peer tutors work with folks at any stage of the writing process, from pre-writing through drafting, revising, and editing. We believe in helping people become better writers through a facilitated understanding of their own processes: we are not a drop-off editing service, but rather a holistic, caring, and professional place where undergraduate, graduate, staff, and faculty writers can discover fruitful, clear ways to best express and explain their thoughts and research. The Writing Center is dedicated to helping all students come into their own voices and to assuaging writing-related anxiety through practice and acceptance.

We have an online FAQ and additional info for faculty. Although we strongly encourage all writers to visit the Writing Center at some point during their time at Ithaca College, we also request that faculty not issue a blanket requirement for all class members to visit the Center for the same assignment/during the same window of time, as such provisions strain our resources and may block access from clients in need.

Syllabus boilerplate:

The Writing Center aims to help students from all disciplines, backgrounds, and experiences to develop greater independence as writers.  We are committed to helping students see writing as central to critical and creative thinking. For the duration of spring 2021, the Writing Center will continue to offer synchronous video conferences only using a combination of Zoom and Google Docs. The physical location in Smiddy 107 will not be open to clients.

Appointments can be made at Ithaca.mywconline.com, which is also linked on the apps.ithaca.edu page. During business hours, you can message ithacacollegewritingcenter on Google Hangouts or email ithacacollegewritingcenter@gmail.com to get real-time assistance or drop-in (subject to tutor availability).

In a friendly, comfortable atmosphere, writers at all levels participate in one-on-one conferences with trained student and faculty tutors to work on effective strategies for all aspects of the writing process. Topics explored in these conferences may include

o   the generation, organization, and focusing of ideas
o   understanding assignments and readings
o   comprehensive rewriting of drafts
o   sentence structure and style
o   grammar, punctuation, and spelling
o   research and note-taking methods
o   source documentation

We offer these services for students in all disciplines: humanities and sciences, business, health sciences and human performance, communications, and music. In our conferences, we encourage students to develop confidence as independent thinkers and writers. This means that we will not revise or correct papers for students, but instead will help them learn how to do so for themselves.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday through Thursday from 7 PM -10 PM.

Limited hours begin the evening of Sunday, January 31st, and regular hours begin the evening of Sunday, February 7th.

The schedule can be viewed and appointments made by visiting ithaca.mywconline.com or the hub at apps.ithaca.edu Like the Writing Center on Facebook (facebook.com/ithacawc/) and follow us on Instagram (Instagram.com/ithacawritingcenter) to be the first to know about workshops and write-ins: facebook.com/ithacawc/
