Information Technology is excited to announce that Zoom has released a new feature to allow for live computer-generated transcription services for meetings and webinars. Effective Monday, October 19, 2020, the live computer-generated transcription feature will be enabled by default for all Ithaca College Zoom accounts.

How will this impact me?
Effective Monday, October 19, 2020, the next time you log into the Zoom client from a desktop or mobile device, the text under the CC button will change from Closed Caption to Live Transcript, and the Zoom meeting host will have a new option when clicking that button to Enable Auto-Transcription. When participating in future meetings and webinars, you will see live transcription services available, if the meeting host has enabled it.

How does it work?
Once the meeting host enables live transcription within a Zoom meeting or webinar (by clicking Enable Auto-Transcription under the CC button), subtitles will automatically be displayed to all participants who join from a Zoom client (your experience may be different depending on the specific client you are using). The participant can then choose to hide subtitles or to view the additional full transcript.

This live transcription service is created by automatic speech recognition software, so names or other words may not be displayed correctly. Enabling this live transcription service will provide more inclusive options for subtitle and full transcript services for our campus community. Requests for accommodations for human-created captioning services should still be directed to the event organizer/sponsor. Human-created captions are the only method that meet accommodation standards.

Meeting and event organizers are responsible for ensuring that the following language is included in the advertising for their meeting or event, “Individuals who would like to request accessibility accommodations should contact youremail@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests be made as soon as possible to ensure they can be met.”
