Six HSHP students formed two groups to compete at the 30+ hour Penn State Healthcare Management National Case Competition at the Undergraduate Level during the weekend of Oct. 30- Nov. 1. We are very proud of these students who set aside their regular studies and lives to engage in this stimulating intellectual and team building experience. Our two IC teams competed in a pool of 11 undergraduate teams on a case proposed by Geisinger Health System on Medicaid Expansion in Pennsylvania.
The Competition ended Sunday night with a 2nd place win for this team:
Devi de Oliveira '21 Clinical Health Studies- PT
Natalie Milliken '21 Occupational Therapy
Kristen Rafferty '21 Health Sciences
Our second team representing IC did not place in the finals yet showed a determined effort and a solution particularly focused on diversity and social determinants of health.
Madison Jones '22 Health Sciences
June Fortner '21 Public and Community Health
Sarah Christiansen '21 Clinical Health Studies- PT
Devi de Oliveira also won the Christopher Speer Spirit Award for her spirit and energy in answering the questions posed by the judges in the final round.
Most, if not all, of the other teams were comprised of health care management students. Our interprofessional teams demonstrated that working together, all health professionals can significantly impact health care delivery challenges with empathy and creativity.
The team advisors were Dr. Karen Edwards and Dr. Stewart Auyash of the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education.
