Women and Islam is a 3 credit, ICC diversity course that brings theories, expressions, and historical realities of gender to the foreground as we think about the variety of contexts in which Muslims live. Through a study of historical primary sources, as well as contemporary films, art, and music, we will focus on how religion and gender create and recreate each other through an exploration of religious texts, legal interpretations, and religious practices. We will think through feminist methodologies for studying religion, as well as the ways that Muslim women exert their agency in challenging, changing, and/or preserving their roles in Muslim societies.
